Uptown Greenville is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization established to develop plans and implement actions necessary to revitalize and to ensure continued growth to the Uptown Business District of Greenville, North Carolina.
Since its inception, Uptown Greenville has made great strides in revitalizing Greenville's center city. Uptown Greenville first became a non-profit organization in 1984 and was known as Evergreen of Greenville. This organization had not been active and was brought back to life by a downtown steering committee formed by Mayor Nancy Jenkins in 1994. The new organization was called Uptown Greenville to change the negative perceptions of the downtown to a positive, things are looking up as the group worked with the city in public/private partnerships to revitalize Greenville's center City.
One of the key efforts by Uptown Greenville, working with the city was the removal of the section of Evans that was made into a sidewalk mall in 1974. Thanks to efforts by Uptown Greenville, $300,000 was raised toward the project and the Evans Street Mall was reconstructed and the streetscape was opened and redesigned in 1998 which was a major step needed to improve foot traffic to the area. Since then, many new businesses have opened and the retail businesses are continuing to grow.
The Façade Improvement Grant program was jointly funded by Uptown Greenville and the City of Greenville and started in 1995. This program provides matching grants for renovation of properties in the Uptown district and has been a major success. The restoration of buildings in this district thanks to the Façade Grant program enables properties within the district to qualify for major federal and state rehabilitation tax credits. This program continues to assist property owners and results in a more beautiful Uptown.
